Rocky Start for New JQ Climbing Facility
It was while doing a bit of ‘community mapping’ for the recent Birmingham University project that Millie and I came across a recent addition to the roll call of fascinating enterprises in the Jewellery Quarter. This one is positively welcoming a steep climb and a rocky start to business here; it’s Birmingham Bouldering Centre, based in Arch 30/31 in Water Street, just yards from Livery Street and Constitution Hill. It features a large custom built bouldering centre, with a full range of grades, with continual problem setting and changes, plus a cafe and gear shop. The manager was happy for us to wander in and look around. If you’re looking for a new challenge to improve coordination and fitness, you could do worse than taking a look at bouldering. The beauty of it is, of course, that having put in the practice in the safe and dry here in the JQ, you can take your newly-honed skills out into the wilds on real boulders, and get all the benefit of the great outdoors too.
