RO St Bernards has begun clearance works at the 2.34 acre Science Museum site to make way for its £63m Newhall Square scheme.
It will require the demolition of the rear of 144 Newhall Street, and a two-storey building next door.
The grade II-listed facade, which fronts Newhall Square, will be retained. Newhall Square will comprise 235 flats together with shops, cafes, bars, offices and a 100-room Travelodge, all built around a new public square.
Flats will go on sale in the autumn ready for occupation in 2009. Prices will start at around £100,000, sold through Knight Frank. Colliers CRE and Wright Silverwood will be letting the commercial space.
